The friendly country town of Crookwell in NSW Capital Country is located between Sydney (two and half hours drive) and Canberra (ninety minutes drive) and receives day trippers and visitors from both, as well as from the nearby town of Goulburn NSW, almost directly south.
The town has preserved its colonial heritage well, there are numerous buildings that have survived from that era here, evoking images of the past as you walk the main street (Goulburn Street). It is not hard to imagine the horses, carts and wagons that plied this region only a hundred years ago. Many of the shopfront buildings still have their build date at the top.
History
At the beginning of the 20th Century, Crookwell played an important role in the development of the region. Over the years, the surrounding farming region became a major potato growing region and still is. Cattle are also grown here, as is wool. You will even see Alpacas roaming the fields now, kept for their fine wool, considered even better than the Merino sheep wool that is also raised here.
Since then, cars and motorbikes now traverse the streets and the pace has picked up a bit, yet you can find the country charm has not left. A classic regional town in the picturesque Great Dividing Range, it has much to offer the visitor.
