Cairns Australia - Tropical Paradise

The cosmopolitan city of Cairns Australia, in the Tropical North of Queensland, has plenty of chances to taste world class cuisine with a tropical flavour and great seafood, an excellent range of shopping, chances to experience Aboriginal Culture and a whole range of cruises and adventure tours.

Cairns Shopping

The Esplanade next to Trinity Harbour is a good place to start exploring Cairns, the place has everything from fine dining restaurants to ice cream parlours, including bistros, wine bars, fish and chips and in the evenings and night, markets selling everything from gifts to locally made arts and crafts.

Other good places to idle the hours away for shoppers: Cairns Central complex and the Pier Marketplace. There, you will find wolrl known brands, fashion, accessories, even locally made goods and designs.

Go to Rusty’s Market on Grafton Street for tropical fruits. Mangoes, jack fruit, rambutans and lychees, avocados, all locally grown and as fresh as they can be unless you go and pick them off the trees yourself. Also grown here - coffee, tea and herbs.

Cairns has day tours and cruises everyday. Activities include exploring the Daintree National Park, fishing, Great Barrier Reef cruises, snorkelling and diving, even ballooning, helicopter rides and white water rafting.

With easy access, Fitzroy Island is a popular attraction.

Australian Aboriginal Culture

Go to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and Cairns Regional Art Gallery for great examples of Aboriginal Art and chances to learn about Aboriginal Culture from those in the know, local Aboriginals! Try learning how to throw a boomerang. Your boomerang won’t come back? They’ll show you. Heads Up!

There are regular exhibitions of local fine art at the Cairns Regional Art Gallery, they also host travelling exhibitions from Australia and the Torres Strait Islands on a regular basis.

At Tjapukai, they combine culture and entertainment with education. You can sample a whole range of traditional foods, see some great authentic dancing and learn about aboriginal herbs and medicines.

 

Cairns Skyrail

There, you will also find the Skyrail. Be prepared for an amazing silent ride over the canopy of the dense rainforest up to the mountain village of Kuranda. From there, you can either head back over the canopy or take a steam train ride amongst the rainforest and over the spectacular Barron Gorge back to Cairns.
