Museum of Democracy

See map Greater Canberra Surrounds Map.

The Old Parliament House, also formerly known as the Provisional Parliament House and now the Museum of Democracy, was the seat of the Parliament of Australia from 1927 to 1988. Located in Parkes, Canberra, it is now a museum dedicated to Australian democracy.

Designed by John Smith Murdoch, the building was intended to be temporary, but it ended up serving as the house of Parliament for over 60 years. The building itself is in the Simplified Classical or Stripped Classical Style, which was commonly used for Australian government buildings built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Today, the Old Parliament House is a museum that explores the history of Australian democracy. Visitors can tour the building, which has been restored to its original condition, and learn about the important events that took place there. The museum also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, lectures, and concerts. The Old Parliament House Gardens are also open to the public and are a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
