The Sulphur (Yellow) Crested Cockatoo, a Parrot, can be seen in eastern parts of Australia, Perth region and New Guinea.
Sulphur Crested Cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) are large, striking white parrots native to Australia, New Guinea, and some Indonesian islands. They are easily recognized by their distinctive bright yellow (sulphur-colored) crest of feathers on top of their heads, which they can raise or lower depending on their mood or excitement.
Description
This beautiful yet somewhat noisy bird can be kept as pets, although they are high maintenance as they feel the need to be close to their partner and will screech loudly, hoping for a similar response. Indeed, they are loud enough to wake the dead as my grandmother used to say.
Their playful nature and ability to mimic sounds make them fascinating both in the wild and as companion animals.
They also love chewing on available wood, such as a nearby favourite piece of garden furniture or window frames. They also like climbing up curtains, so lace ones will not do.
Color, Size, Beak and Sex Differences
Color: Predominantly white with a yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of their wings and tail.
Size: They can grow up to 45 cm (about 18 inches) in length, making them one of Australia’s largest parrots.
Beak: They have a strong, dark grey-black hooked beak.
Sex Differences: Males and females look very similar, but females can sometimes be distinguished by their red-brown eyes, compared to the darker brown eyes of males.
Where to See Them
These cockatoos are commonly found in wooded habitats across Australia, New Guinea, and some Indonesian islands. In Australia, they are widespread, from Tasmania through Victoria and New South Wales to the northern tip of Queensland and into the Northern Territory.
Behavior and Intelligence
Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are highly intelligent and sociable birds. They are known for their ability to mimic sounds and human speech, and they have the learning capacity of a 1 to 2-year-old human child. Their playful and affectionate nature makes them popular as pets, though their intelligence also means they require a lot of mental stimulation.
In the Wild
In the wild, these birds often feed on seeds found on the ground. In larger numbers, at least one of them will always be perched high on a nearby tree or other object to loudly warn the others about the approach of potential predators.
Notes
Social Structure: They are very social and often seen in large, noisy flocks.
Pest Status: In some areas, their large numbers and habit of feeding on crops can lead them to be considered pests.
Lifespan: In the wild, they can live for several decades, and even longer in captivity.
Dancing Birds
They also have been recorded dancing to music but that’s another story. Apparently, this one, dances better than me to Happy by Pharrell Williams. So I have been told.
